Interest Rate: Fingers crossed, this could be gold.
Reasons Fox thinks people should watch Brooklyn Nine-NIne:
1. Andy Samberg
2. Andy Samberg
3. It's a show with a talented team that actually shows promise
*JUST KIDDING*
3. Andy Samberg!!!!
Reasons people should watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine:
1. This show is built to feature an ensemble cast, and luckily Fox has hired some very funny people.
2. The writing/producing is coming from Parks and Rec alumni and seems sharp, even in the preview, which is almost unbelievable for the start of a sitcom. Well, sharp save the cringe-inducing, "the only mystery he can't solve is how to grow up" line. Gross.
3. The premise, while dated, actually works.
Listen, I love Andy Samberg probably a whole lot more than the next person. In college I learned the subtle art of procrastination through repeated viewings of Ka-Blamo, and this picture was my desktop background for longer than I care to admit. And Samberg has been hilarious as side characters in the movies he's done. But when push comes to shove, I have concerns about his ability to play a sustained leading character that isn't Rod Kimble. There's no doubt that he'll be funny, but does he have enough straight man in him to carry off the emotional heft a main character has to have to keep an audience interested week-in and week-out?
Besides, Brooklyn doesn't even have to lean on the crutch of Samberg. The cast could be golden, with Terry Crews--whose recent turn in Arrested Development made me a fan--Joe Lo Truglio, and a slew of side characters who had me chuckling the entire preview.
Fox has had a good run of popular comedies (most of which I don't care for) starring people I think are talented. Brooklyn could be the male answer to the Mindy Projects of their schedule, as long as it doesn't become the Andy Samberg show.
