THe Blacklist

For decades, ex-government agent Raymond "Red" Reddington has been one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives. Brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe, Red was known by many as "The Concierge of Crime." Now, he's mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer.

Cheeky criminality

Interest Rate: cautiously optimistic.

I'm going to be the first to say it--I am absolutely delighted that James Spader has aged enough that we can stop pretending we find him attractive. No, indeed, Mr. Spader has grown into performing a role much more fitting: being menacing just for his face. As far as the preview goes, I'm down for watching him try to find his own voice in the genre that giants like Sir Anthony Hopkins have trademarked. I think he might even have the chops.

It really comes down to the writing. I admit, I'm a little skittish based on the preview. For what could be a fascinating psychological drama that delves into the justifications of the criminal mind, there sure do be a lot of 'splosions. Don't get me wrong, I love my Michael Bay when it can be at all justified. But is it justified in this show? I get that this is a preview, and networks are notorious for advertising clips that in no way follow the actual mood/pacing of the show. So, based on Mr. Spader of the no-longer-awkwardly-unhot, I look forward to testing this one out.

Petty sidenote: Hopefully someone somewhere makes sure the leading lady doesn't continue to wear bright pink frosted lipgloss. Just the few clips of her face was enough to send me shuddering back to the moldly halls of junior high school. Talk about PTSD.

    Mary

It is quite likely that Mary has made an appearance on her share of blacklists.
