Interest Rate: Meh. I can't even think of a clever way to express the meh-ness. It's so meh I'm meh about my meh-naucity.
So, have you seen the Julia Roberts/Susan Sarandon flick Stepmom? How about Modern Family? Basically, the protagonist is a combination of Julia Robert's character and Gloria, minus the sappy sweetness of a cancer mom and the magnetic pull of Gloria's personality.
Now, it's possible that I'm incredibly biased towards all things Bradley Whitford (I'll be your Donna, Josh!), but I think this show would be much more interesting from his perspective. He's far more talented as an actor, and isn't the dad that brings this whole family together more emotionally invested in all parties?
The show doesn't look horrid, it just doesn't have much to distinguish itself, either. I mostly blame Malin Akerman. She doesn't have the innate charm to pull this part off to the point where I root for her success in the family. I get that she's a reformed party girl, but I don't buy that she's got anything going on on a deeper emotional level.
And I kinda have issue with the idea that Whitford's character previously married shrews and now has an angel. That's actually not how it works--people tend to date and marry in repetitive patterns, and shrewish people don't tend to make themselves that way on their own. The truth of how complex marriage gets and the baggage everyone brings to the table from their past experiences, spouses, children, and personal quirks could still be a good show without casting everyone else as the villain.
That said, I really hope I get proven wrong on this one. I want an excuse to watch Bradley Whitford all day, every day. You call it creepy, I call it knowing what I want. Which is Josh. I want Josh Lyman. Just so we're all on the same page.
