Genius.
When I heard that ABC was doing an Alice in Wonderland show, I was thrilled. I immediately thought of American McGee's Alice and wondered how ABC would reinvent the story. Turns out, it is a Once Upon a Time spinoff. This makes sense considering OUAT had already set up a Wonderland to use, but my smile waned when I found out since OUAT is a glorified, half-assed soap packaged as a creative drama. Still, I was curious.
Then, I watched the preview.
Did you watch it? Watch it now.
...
Sucker.
I don't know where to start.
Wait. Yes I do.
Genies? Really? I have short patience with conveniently magical creatures at the best of times, but packaging it as a star-crossed love affair is a little difficult to swallow. Plus, you want me to believe that a kickass woman who traveled various worlds seeking adventure gave up everything to sit in a padded cell because her boyfriend disappeared? Sure, she gets her act together and breaks out . . . when there's hope to see him again. How romantic. (Side note: when did genies get hot? I want Robin Williams painted blue and having a fight with a tasseled rug.)
Also, how many stories are they going to make Alice the protagonist of? They've already added The Wizard of Oz to her credits ("I got you back your heart," anyone?)
And let's circle back to the fact that she was willing to get a lobotomy over a boy. Is that true love or just pathetic? Call me new-fashioned, but it's well past the point of pathetic. Pathetic is a dot to our heroine.
Am I wrong? Is anyone excited for this? Please, please give me something to get excited about in Wonderland because I have to watch 12 episodes of it.
